66.02 SoftQuad announces WYSIWYG HTML Editor available for FTP
From: ian@sq.com
SoftQuad ships HoTMetaL -- First Commercial Quality Editor
for the World Wide Web
At the first International World Wide Web Conference at CERN in
Geneva, SoftQuad announced SoftQuad HoTMetaL and SoftQuad
HoTMetaL PRO, the first word processors to provide a simple way
to create documents for the World Wide Web, the application of
the Internet that is experiencing the most rapid growth in
network traffic.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Organization: SoftQuad Inc., Toronto, Canada
The preferred access method to the World Wide Web is a graphical
interface tool called Mosaic, which is being downloaded from the
computer networks by approximately 4,000 users per day. Mosaic makes
navigating the Net profoundly easier by presenting a user-friendly way
to view the text, graphics, movies and sound offered by the server
computers.
SoftQuad has established a formal collaborative relationship with the
National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), creators of
Mosaic, and the two organizations' software products are integrated to
allow ease of inter-operation.
At the same time, SoftQuad and Avalanche Development Company announced
a HoTMetaL add-on that allows easy conversion from popular desktop word
processing environments like Microsoft Word and WordPerfect into HTML.
"The world wide enthusiasm for Mosaic and the World Wide Web is a
response to the dramatic simplicity of the software's use for browsing"
said Yuri Rubinsky, President of SoftQuad Inc. "HoTMetaL brings the
same simplicity to authoring with pick lists for the markup codes and
cut-and-paste for the hypertext links."
More and more publishers -- commercial and educational -- are exploring
the use of the World Wide Web as a way to rapidly and inexpensively
reach out to large audiences, both global and internal. As
experimental projects such as the US-based CommerceNet project come
on-line, it will become much easier for publishers to generate revenues
from sales of content -- electronic magazines, newspapers, or other
forms of information -- offered through the World Wide Web.
SoftQuad HoTMetaL blasts through one of the key remaining barriers to
realizing this vision by making the creation and editing of content
that much easier.
What makes it possible for the World Wide Web to offer hyperlinked
text, movies, and pictures is that all documents are in a single file
format called HTML (HyperText Markup Language), which is based on the
Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), the International Standard
for information interchange. A bounty of information is available in
this format ranging from Louvre Museum and Vatican Library exhibits to
information on computer systems, government, science and technology,
and the day's weather forecasts.
SoftQuad HoTMetal includes the following HTML specific features:
viewing of images; a Preview facility for launching Mosaic and other
Web browsers; the ability to copy and paste hypertext links (called
Universal Resource Locators -- URLS) into the document; and a Publish
feature that automatically changes hypertext links from local file
references to global URLs.
Pricing and Availability
SoftQuad HoTMetaL is a free, unsupported edition available on June 1,
1994 from many of the same Internet sites and electronic bulletin
boards as Mosaic, including NCSA, where the URL is:
ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Mosaic/contrib/SoftQuad/sqhotmetal-1.0.tar.gz
The first release is for Sun Motif, with a Microsoft Windows version to
follow soon afterwards.
SoftQuad HoTMetaL PRO is a fully supported commercial version with
additional functionality that will allow users to handle more complex
document structures. For example, it provides WYSIWYG editing of
complex tables and offers more comprehensive support for authoring,
such as user-defined macros and long or short sets of menus. It will be
available from SoftQuad and its resellers by the end of June 1994 on
Sun Motif and Microsoft Windows for a list price of US$195.00 with a 90
day promotional price of US$149.00.
SoftQuad will also offer the HoTMetaL PRO product for sale over the
Internet.
HoTMetaL, named in honour of the mechanical devices which melted lead
to make type for printing, also includes an upgrade path to SoftQuad
Author/Editor, SoftQuad's flagship software product, which is a full
cross-industry authoring environment that supports SGML.
SoftQuad Inc. delivers SGML software and services offering
multi-platform, standards-based solutions for information management
and electronic publishing. The company provides a broad range of SGML
software tools for the end user as well as for the VAR or integrator.
SoftQuad Inc. is a subsidiary of SoftQuad International Inc., a
publicly traded company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (Symbol
SKI).
